Gregg Popovich's office adorned with lone poster of John Havlicek
Everyone knows San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich is a living legend and the best coach in the league.
But did you know he's a massive fan of John Havlicek?
As Popovich explained in an interview with Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio News Express, the 66-year-old future Hall of Famer keeps his office simple. It's a quiet space to get away from the day-to-day grind of coaching and a spot for him to think.
When Popovich holes up in his lair, he sees the face of a Boston Celtics legend staring back at him.
"In that room, there’s a chair, there’s a table, and there’s a lamp," Popovich explained. "There’s one picture on the wall. It’s been there for the last 18, 20 years. It’s of John Havlicek. So I do think about the legacy here."
As it turns out, Popovich took the poster with him from his office when he coached at Pomona Pitzer, a tiny Division-III liberal arts college in California. It's been Havlicek that's watched over five titles and thousands of wins for Popovich over the past two decades.
The poster, however, made for a bit of awkwardness when Havlicek stepped into Popovich's office a while back. Coach Pop explained that it "might have" made him look like some kind of stalker.
"I was privileged and honored, one time I don't know six, eight, 10 years ago he was in our gym for something. He came back to my office and sat across from me and we got to talk a little bit. I stammered and that kind of thing and just stared at him. I'm sure he saw it, because it was right behind me on the wall."
And why exactly does Popovich have an eight-time champion, 13-time All-Star, 11-time All-NBA, eight-time All-Defense, and the Celtics' all-time leading scorer on his wall?
"If you can't figure it out yourself, I can't help you," Popovich said.
