Durant returns home to face Wizards: 'Fans gonna do what they gonna do'
Kevin Durant returned home to Washington on Tuesday morning, facing a throng of media prior to his Oklahoma City Thunder's matchup against the Wizards.
Almost immediately, he was asked to clarify weekend remarks about local fans pining for his return to D.C. in a Wizards uniform via free agency next summer. On Sunday, Durant suggested Wiz fans "should focus on who you have on your team."
"I'm not saying there's anything wrong with what the fans do," Durant said Tuesday. "Me, I'm just thinking as a player on the other side. Fans gonna do what they gonna do. I appreciate all the support going our way. But I'm just looking at it as an opposing player and if I was on that team and they came in here and did that, I wouldn't like it."
Durant has an ally in Bradley Beal.
"(Wizards' fans behavior last season was) disrespectful because (Durant) plays for Oklahoma City," the Wizards' shooting guard said Monday.
Among the sights in the stands at last January's game were numerous "Durant to D.C." signs, which can also be expected Tuesday, along with the commensurate media attention. But as he's demonstrated all along, the prize catch of 2016 free agency won't offer much about next summer.
"I'll worry about that when I get there," Durant said. "I'm just excited I get another opportunity to play in the NBA again tonight and play against a great team."
Unencumbered, he's even leaving the dreaded hometown ticket requests with his mother, also known as the "the real MVP".
"She is a superwoman so she's taking care of everything."
