John Johnson, former SuperSonics forward, dies at 68
Two-time NBA All-Star and former Seattle SuperSonics forward John Johnson died Friday at age 68.
Johnson's godson, John Herndon, told the San Jose Mercury News that the cause of death is currently unknown.
"He just didn't wake up," Herndon said.
Johnson was a key member of the 1979 NBA champion Seattle SuperSonics, as one of the league's first point forwards. The 6-foot-7 small forward led the Sonics in assists during the 1978-79 season to help the team to its only title.
The 12-year veteran started his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he had his best individual seasons, making the All-Star team in 1970-71 and 1971-72. For his career, Johnson averaged 12.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.8 assists.
He was also a part of the Portland Trail Blazers and Houston Rockets before joining Seattle, the team he retired with.
