Report: Cavs to sign Jordan McRae for rest of season, with option for 2016-17
The Cleveland Cavaliers intend to sign combo guard Jordan McRae for the remainder of the season, with an additional team option for the 2016-27 campaign, Cleveland.com's Chris Haynes reports.
McRae's 10-day contract with the Cavs is set to expire on Wednesday. The 24-year-old, who was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs with the third-last pick in 2014, has also spent two 10-days with the Phoenix Suns this season. In 10 games between the two teams (three with Cleveland), he's averaging five points and one assist, shooting 44.1 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from distance in 9.6 minutes.
McRae profiles as a strong scorer with an attacking mindset and a knack for getting to the free-throw line. In 29 games with the D-League's Delaware 87ers this season, he averaged 23.3 points (fifth in the league), 4.6 rebounds, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.7 steals. He burst onto the NBA radar in late January, when he broke the D-League scoring record with a 61-point outburst against the Canton Charge.
The Suns signed him just three days later.
At 6-foot-5 with a 7-foot wingspan, McRae has tantalizing size for his position, though he lacks the strength to parlay his length into strong individual defense. Turnovers have also been an issue, as he's averaged 3.9 per game in the D-League.
