Vanderbilt-Baylor called off to avoid Drew brothers showdown
The Drew brothers want no part of each other on the hardwood.
Vanderbilt head coach Bryce Drew and Baylor head coach Scott Drew were supposed to square off this season, but called the game in favor of a secret scrimmage.
The pair remembered reading about when Sean Sutton was coaching Oklahoma in 2007 and had a game against his brother Scott, the coach of Oral Roberts.
"We both remember reading the article and envisioned what it would be like for the family," Bryce told ESPN's Jeff Goodman. "No one really wins."
Scott added that there would be no joy in a victory.
"Even if we win, I'm hurting," he said. "There's no real winner."
The Bears ended up paying the Commodores a buyout to avoid the matchup.
"We didn't want to put anyone in our family through that," Scott said. "Including our parents."
The brothers said they'd look forward to a game in the Final Four, but a regular-season contest isn't worth it.
"The games are so stressful as it is," Bryce said. "And there are 350 other Division I teams we can play. There's no reason to play one another."
