Duke suspends Grayson Allen indefinitely
Duke has suspended guard Grayson Allen indefinitely, following his tripping of a player for the third time in his career, as relayed by Jessika Morgan of the News Observer.
Allen tripped Elon guard Steven Santa Ana in Wednesday night's game, leading to a tearful apology postgame with reporters after apologizing to Santa Ana and Phoenix' head coach Matt Matheny privately.
"We have had the opportunity to thoroughly review the incident involving Grayson Allen from last night's game against Elon," head coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a statement Thursday morning. "As I stated last night, the incident was unacceptable and inexcusable.
"He took an important step last night by apologizing in person to Steven Santa Ana and Coach Matt Matheny. As a program, we needed to take further steps regarding his actions that do not meet the standards of Duke Basketball.
"To that end, we have determined that Grayson will be suspended from competition for an indefinite amount of time."
Allen first was caught tripping a player on Feb. 8 of this year during the 2015-16 season. That incident involved Louisville's Ray Spalding and Allen was called for a flagrant foul.
Then on Feb. 25, Allen tripped Florida State's Xavier Rathan-Mayes, though no foul was called on the play. However, the Atlantic Coast Conference reprimanded Allen following the contest.
In 12 games this season, Allen has averaged 16 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. He did not play against Maine on Dec. 3 due to a toe injury.
The No. 5 Blue Devils next play Virginia Tech on Dec. 31 to start their conference schedule.
