Report: Coach K bans team from locker room, wearing Duke apparel
Duke assistant coach Jeff Capel is filling in for Mike Krzyzewski, but Coach K is still calling the shots.
While recovering from back surgery, Krzyzewski had a meeting with the Blue Devils players at his home and banned them from the locker room, as well as from wearing Duke apparel, according to Jeff Goodman of ESPN. The team is mired in a slump and Goodman notes Coach K has used this form of discipline in the past.
"He wasn't happy," said a source close to the situation. "Especially after the loss to NC State."
The Blue Devils have lost three of their past four, including a defeat on their home court Monday against the unranked Wolfpack. The team also held a players-only meeting after sitting down with Coach K, according to Goodman.
"He needs to do more than just take away their jerseys," another source said. "There are bigger issues that need to be addressed."
Capel was disappointed to see the news leak.
It's been a challenging season for Duke in some respects, as Grayson Allen was suspended for another tripping incident and the team has dealt with a myriad of injuries.
Highly touted fresmen Jayson Tatum, Marques Bolden, and Harry Giles all weren't on the floor to begin the campaign, meaning the team is still learning to play with one another in late January.
The Blue Devils will earn their privileges back when "they start living up to the standards of the Duke program," a source said.
