Kentucky's De'Aaron Fox declares for NBA draft

Justin Ford-USA TODAY Sports

After an impressive first season at Kentucky, De'Aaron Fox is bound for the NBA.

The freshman point guard has elected to capitalize on his potential lottery-pick status and declare for the 2017 NBA Draft.

"I’ve decided to enter the 2017 NBA Draft and I will be signing with an agent," Fox announced on the school's website." I think I’ve had a pretty good freshman season through the guidance of our coaching staff and I think it’s time for me to live out my dream.

“Last but not least, I want to thank the Big Blue Nation. There is no other fan base like you in the country. I’ll miss playing in front of you, but I know you’ll continue to support me at the next level.”

Throughout the season, Fox established himself as one of the premiere point guards in the nation, averaging 16.7 points, 4.6 assists, and four rebounds over 29.6 minutes. Fox was the No. 6 overall recruit in the country heading into this season, and helped guide the Wildcats to an Elite Eight appearance.

In a draft class littered with talented guards, Fox has been projected by many as a top-10 pick, and even a top-five pick in some scenarios.

“De’Aaron’s speed, length and ability to pick up defensively from 94 feet set him apart from his peers,” head coach John Calipari said. “De’Aaron came in here focused from day one, and to see his improvement from the beginning of the season to the end was special. What you saw from De’Aaron over the last month and a half of the season I think is what NBA teams will get for the future.”

The fact Fox shot just 25 percent from long range could impact his slot, but teams can take just one look at his 39-point Sweet 16 performance against UCLA to know that Fox doesn't wilt in big games.
