Pitt hires Duke's Jeff Capel as head coach
Pittsburgh has hired former Duke associate head coach Jeff Capel to become its next head coach, the team announced.
A seven-year deal for Capel is expected to be announced Wednesday, sources told 247Sports' Evan Daniels.
"We are excited to announce Jeff Capel as our head men's basketball coach at the University of Pittsburgh," Pitt director of athletics Heather Lyke said in a statement. "His relentless work ethic, passion for the game and clear vision of how to build a program capable of competing at the highest levels in the ACC and on the national stage are impressive."
"I am honored to be named the head coach of the University of Pittsburgh men's basketball program," Cape said. "Pitt has a great tradition of success and I look forward to putting together a staff and team that will enable us to build on that tradition."
The Panthers won just eight games this past season, and have only made the NCAA tournament twice since switching from the Big East to the ACC.
Capel, a Duke assistant under Mike Krzyzewski since 2011, had previous stints as a head coach at Oklahoma and Virginia Commonwealth.
