Purdue grad transfer Matt Haarms committed to BYU, he announced Thursday.

Haarms is immediately eligible to play for the Cougars next season.

"I truly believe that at BYU, I can develop the most," Haarms told Zagsblog's Adam Zagoria. "People want to say that there's one place or there's two places that you can get to the NBA from college, but I think nowadays the NBA has developed such a network that wherever you go, if you're excelling, you can make it to the league."

Haarms credited a strong relationship with BYU head coach Mark Pope and the rest of the school's coaching staff for helping him make the decision.

The 7-foot-3 center averaged 8.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, and two blocks in 29 games as a junior for the Boilermakers. He was also considering Kentucky and Texas Tech.

Haarms will have his hands full trying to help replace the production of BYU's leading scorer, Yoeli Childs, who just completed his senior season.

The Cougars finished the 2019-20 season with a 24-8 record, including a 13-3 mark in WCC play.
