NCAA committee upholds show-cause order for ex-UConn coach Ollie
The NCAA upheld its three-year show-cause order against former Connecticut head coach Kevin Ollie, the Division I Infractions Appeals Committee announced Wednesday.
Ollie was sanctioned last summer for a number of infractions, including exceeding the number of allowable preseason activities, deploying more than the allowable number of coaches, failing to "monitor his staff or promote an atmosphere of compliance," and a booster providing additional benefits to the athletes, according to the NCAA's report.
During the appeal process, Ollie countered that his show-cause penalty should be rescinded due to contradictory information given to the Committee on Infractions. The panel reiterated that it relied on first-hand accounts of the infractions when weighing the merit of the appeal.
The Appeals Committee also noted that Ollie did not fulfill his obligation to cooperate with the ethical conduct investigation, stating: "There is no exception to full cooperation related to reliance on the advice of counsel, and partial cooperation does not fulfill the responsibility of an individual to fully cooperate in the infractions process."
Ollie replaced legendary Huskies coach Jim Calhoun in 2012, and he generally lived up to his former coach's standard of on-court success. In six seasons leading the program, Ollie shepherded his alma mater to a 127-79 record and two NCAA Tournament appearances - including a national title in 2014.
However, amid concerns over permissible contact and workouts with recruits, Ollie was dismissed from the program in 2018. The Huskies have gone 35-29 in the two years under Ollie's successor, Dan Hurley.
