Florida's Johnson leaving hospital following on-court collapse

Florida junior Keyontae Johnson is being released from the hospital Tuesday after collapsing during a game on Dec. 12, the program announced.

"We continue to be amazed at the pace of his recovery and look forward to spending Christmas together as a family," Johnson's family said in a statement.

Johnson collapsed to the court following a timeout, according to The Associated Press. The SEC Preseason Player of the Year was brought to a local hospital in critical but stable condition. He was placed in a medically induced coma at one point.

However, Johnson's condition improved by Friday to the point that he was able to record a video message to his supporters.

The 21-year-old tested positive for COVID-19 during the summer. Though his current condition hasn't been officially attributed to the virus, it's linked to heart issues including myocarditis, an infection that can lead to sudden cardiac arrest.

"Along with so many well wishes and prayers, we've understandably gotten questions about the cause and extent of Keyontae's illness," the family added. "As much as everyone involved wants firm answers, the process to draw definitive conclusions continues, and we ask for patience as the medical professionals continue their work."

Johnson entered the Gators' game versus Florida State averaging a collegiate career-high of 19.7 points per game.
