Notre Dame's Burton to miss multiple weeks with knee injury

Notre Dame guard Markus Burton will be sidelined on a week-to-week basis after sustaining a knee injury in Tuesday's overtime loss to Rutgers, the school announced.

The ACC's reigning Rookie of the Year went down in the opening minutes of Tuesday's contest after making his first and only shot of the game. Rutgers big Emmanuel Ogbole attempted to block the Notre Dame star on the restricted-area attempt but missed and fell on Burton's right leg.

Burton limped off the court and was promptly ruled out for the remainder of the matchup. He eventually returned to the bench but was not in uniform and had his right leg on a chair.

Fighting Irish wing Matt Allocco scored 24 points to help Notre Dame take the Scarlet Knights to overtime without its star point guard. However, after Rutgers took a one-point lead on a free throw by five-star recruit Dylan Harper with 11 seconds left, Allocco missed a running three at the buzzer in the extra frame, cementing the Scarlet Knights' 85-84 win.

"I couldn't be more proud of how my teammates competed following my injury, and I know they will pick me up and continue to play well," Burton said in a statement Wednesday. "I look forward to supporting them in any way possible.

"As in everything I do in basketball, I will attack my rehab and give it my best to get back on the floor at full strength as soon as possible."

The 5-foot-11 guard was averaging 21.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, 5.2 assists, and 1.6 steals in five games leading up to Tuesday.
