Syracuse's Jim Boeheim intends to retire in 3 years

Syracuse has three years left with coach Jim Boeheim.

The leader of the school's men's basketball team has announced he intends to retire in three years.

The team's season ended in controversy as it was forced to miss out on the postseason due to a self-imposed ban.

Boeheim and the program were handed stiff punishment from the NCAA earlier this month for a failure to control and monitor the program.

He was given a nine-game conference play suspension for next season and forced to vacate 108 of his career wins. The vacation is the most vacated victories in NCAA investigation history, taking him from second place to sixth all-time.

"I have also had recent discussions with Coach Boeheim about the Infractions Committee Report, and the future of his team and program. Coach Boeheim has assured me that he will respond thoughtfully and appropriately to the serious findings of the Infractions Committee Report," school chancellor Kent Syverud said in a school release.

"Coach Boeheim has also told me that he intends to retire as Head Coach in three years. His goal in making this decision and announcement now is to bring certainty to the team and program in the coming years, and enable and plan for a successful, longer-term transition in coaching leadership. Coach Boeheim's commitment to ensuring that the men's basketball program remains strong even after his tenure is just one more example of his deep loyalty to our University."

Boeheim recently announced that he would not be going anywhere before an audience of 700 people at a Hardwood Club dinner. However, he was told to avoid speaking before the media following the NCAA punishment.

Boeheim has been the head coach for nearly 40 years, leading the Orange to a 18-13 record in 2014-15.
