VCU's Mo Alie-Cox charged after allegedly punching woman in the face
VCU forward Mo Alie-Cox has been charged with misdemeanor assault and battery after allegedly punching a woman in the face during a disagreement, according to WTVR CBS 6 in Richmond.
The incident reportedly occurred on the night of April 3, which is the same night former Rams coach Shaka Smart informed his players he was accepting the head coaching job at Texas.
According to court documents, the accuser got into a verbal altercation with a group of men and a woman that included Alie-Cox, leading to her saying "It's not my fault Shaka Smart left. Is that why your (sic) mad?"
A physical altercation ensued which led to Alie-Cox allegedly punching the woman in the face. He is due back in court on May 20.
VCU athletic director Ed McLaughlin issued a statement on the matter.
"We are aware of the charge against Mo Alie-Cox, and we will continue to monitor the situation closely," McLaughlin said. "We will allow the legal process to run its course and act appropriately within our VCU Athletics Student-Athlete Code of Conduct as more details become clear."
Alie-Cox, a redshirt sophomore, averaged 7.5 points and 5.7 rebounds this past season.
