In the midst of the College World Series Super Regional matchup Saturday against Kentucky, the Louisville Cardinals have a new all-time strikeout leader as top draft prospect Brendan McKay recorded his 377th punch out with the team.
McKay had to work for the record-setting strikeout, finally wearing Kentucky's designated hitter down after a nine-pitch battle including three consecutive fouls prior to the final strike.
The 21-year-old left-hander surpassed Kyle Funkhouser to claim the record, who spent time in the program from 2013-2016 and is currently in the Detroit Tigers organization.
With the draft coming up Monday, McKay is projected to go in the first round and could wind up going first overall to the Minnesota Twins. The two-way prospect is also in Saturday's lineup as the cleanup hitter.
Louisville took game one of the three-game set Friday with a 5-2 victory.
