College Baseball Roundup: Arkansas rallies over TAMU; Lakins spins masterpiece

Performance of the Week

Travis Lakins throws 10-inning two-hitter

Ohio State sophomore Travis Lakins came into the season with lots of hype surrounding him. The right-hander is admired for his mid-90s fastball, though his command is in question. 

It would be an understatement to say that Lakins was dialed in when the Buckeyes took on No. 25 Nebraska on Saturday.

Lakins pitched a 10-inning, two-hit masterpiece against the Huskers in a 2-1 victory, and his statline is pretty amazing. He threw 121 pitches - 85 for strikes - while striking out seven.

"All four of my pitches were working today," Lakins said. "I was locating my changeup very well and was hitting command with my fastball. They are a great hitting team and I knew if I competed and let my defense play behind me, that we would have a chance to win."

Lakins gave up a solo homer in the third inning, but followed that up by retiring the next 21 batters. 

Upset of the Week

Arkansas 9 vs. Texas A&M 8

This was an easy one to pick out and it happened late in the week.

Before the result of this game came to fruition, Arkansas and top-ranked Texas A&M were mired by a rain delay. After a string of storms struck the region, umpires decided to suspend play and to pick up on Sunday.

At the time, the Aggies were up 8-3 in the seventh inning, with a victory almost assuredly in the bag. 

Instead, a rain delay was just what the doctor ordered, as the Razorbacks scored one run in the seventh and five in the eighth - all with two out - to claim the improbable 9-8 upset win.

It was just the fourth loss of the season for Texas A&M, who are three weeks removed from dethroning LSU atop the polls.

Story of the Week

Illinois wins D1-best 13th game in a row

Chalk up another victory for the Illini.

This team doesn't remember what it's like to lose, as Illinois has won a Division 1-best 13 consecutive games dating back to March 29.

The D1 record for consecutive wins is 34, set by Texas in 1977 and Florida Atlantic in 1999 - so the Illini still have a long way to go. 

Nevertheless, No. 12 Illinois has won seven straights series', is off to the best start in school history (32-6-1), and is sitting pretty atop the Big Ten.

Plays of the Week

Walk-off stolen bases? Yeah, those are a thing, courtesy of Louisville's Corey Ray.

Arizona State's Johhny Sewald gives us his best Mike Trout impersonation in center field. 

Virginia second baseman Ernie Clement doesn't like when opposing teams get base hits up the middle. So he doesn't let them.

Rain Delay Antics

North Carolina and High Point were in a rain delay, so naturally, they chucked fruit at each other.

Clemson and Duke? Well, they reignited their football rivalry.

Injury Report

North Carolina's Reilly Hovis requires Tommy John surgery

The Tar Heels got some bad news this week as junior pitcher Reilly Hovis will miss the remainder of the season.

The right-hander was diagnosed with forearm discomfort, according to Baseball America's Vince Lara-Cinisomo, that will force him to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery.

It's a huge blow for North Carolina, as Hovis is a year removed from being named a first-team All-ACC as a reliever. He struck out 81 batters in 64 innings en route to a sparkling 2.25 ERA out of the bullpen.
