Baylor's Rami Hammad arrested on third-degree felony stalking charge
Baylor appears to be in the news yet again, and for all the wrong reasons.
Offensive lineman Rami Hammad was arrested Monday and received a felony charge of stalking, according to Kristin Hoppa of The Waco Tribune.
A 911 call was made by a professor at Baylor when Hammad refused to leave his ex-girlfriend alone.
"We are aware of the charge against Rami Hammad, and per Athletic Department policy, he has been suspended from all team activities pending resolution of this issue," a statement from the Baylor athletic department said Tuesday.
The 21-year-old offensive lineman had allegedly been waiting for his ex-girlfriend before her summer classes began on July 7, and that the unnamed woman became fearful and did not want to leave the class by herself. She sought council from her professor, who walked with her to his office and attempted to call Baylor athletics, but received no answer.
The 911 call was placed only after calls to the athletic department were unsuccessful.
According to an arrest affidavit, Hammad was told by police on July 11 not to have contact with the woman, and that the woman had told officers that she had taken "extensive measures" to avoid Hammad, going so far as driving a vehicle and subleasing a home Hammad had no knowledge of.
Hammad reportedly said the reason he had been looking for his ex-girlfriend was that he was concerned for her safety.
"Hammad advised after an unsuccessful search, he knew she would have to attend class the next morning and found her walking into class," the arrest affidavit states. "Hammad advised he just wanted to talk to the victim in an attempt to mend their troubled relationship."
The 6-foot-4, 340-pound junior was charged with third-degree felony stalking and was booked into McLennan County Jail. According to Hoppa, Hammad was kept in jail Tuesday in lieu of a $5,000 bond.
Hammad played in 13 games last year for the Bears as a sophomore.
