Oklahoma, Texas Tech combine for record-breaking performance
If you took a drink for every time the word "shootout" was mentioned during the Oklahoma-Texas Tech broadcast, Sunday is going to be a very rough day.
The Sooners and Red Raiders put up huge numbers in the contest, combining for 1,708 yards, each totaling exactly 854, an NCAA record. The two programs also tied an FBS record with 75 total first downs.
The game also saw an FBS record set for combined passing yards (1,279) and total offense by two players (Patrick Mahomes and Baker Mayfield with 1,383 yards).
Here's a look at the top performances from the Saturday night shootout in Lubbock.
Baker Mayfield
In his first return to Texas Tech since transferring to Oklahoma, Mayfield didn't let the Red Raiders student section get to him. The junior quarterback was sensational completing 27-of-36, for 545 yards. His seven touchdowns in the game was a school record.
Joe Mixon
Joe Mixon was a menace on the ground and through the air. Mixon rushed for 263 yards on 31 carries and two touchdowns, while also snagging four catches for 114 yards and three touchdowns. The sophomore becomes the third player in the last 20 seasons to have 250-plus rushing and 100-plus receiving yards.
Patrick Mahomes
Last, but certainly not least. Patrick Mahomes completed 52-of-88 for 734 yards and five touchdowns, while also rushing for 85 yards and two touchdowns. Mahomes broke Kliff Kingsbury's Big 12 record of 50 completions in a game, tied the FBS record for passing yards, and set a new FBS single-game record for total yards (819).
