3 top Michigan moments from the storied rivalry with Ohio State
It's called "The Game," and it's widely considered the fiercest rivalry in all of North American Sports.
Michigan-Ohio State both share great programs, uniforms, fight songs, stadiums, and a mutual hatred.
Over the years, the contest between Michigan and Ohio State has settled Big Ten Champions and Heisman Trophy winners.
With the two hooking up this Thanksgiving weekend for the 112th edition, here's a look back at the three best Wolverines moments in the history of the rivalry.
1991 - Howard's Heisman Pose (Michigan 31, Ohio State 3)
It's might not have been the greatest game, but it produced an iconic moment in college football history. Michigan's Desmond Howard returned a 93-yard punt return in the fourth quarter and struck the famous "Heisman Pose" when he reached the end zone, an award he would eventually claim a few weeks later. The Wolverines win was their fourth in a row over the Buckeyes, but Michigan would ultimately lose to Washington in the Rose Bowl.
1995 - Biakabutuka shows up George (Michigan 31, Ohio State 23)
Ohio State traveled up to Ann Arbor as the No. 2 ranked team, undefeated and led by running back Eddie George, who would go on to win the Heisman. At the end of game, it was another running back Tim Biakabutuka, who would be the talking point. Michigan's Biakabutuka pilled up 313 rushing yards on the day, and freshman Charles Woodson had two interceptions. With the upset, the Wolverines sent Northwestern to the Rose Bowl instead.
1997 - Woodson pulls a Howard (Michigan 20, Ohio State 14)
Michigan was looking to prevent what happened to Ohio State in 1995. The Wolverines were No. 1, undefeated and had Heisman hopeful Charles Woodson in the lineup. Michigan would build a 20-0 lead thanks in part to Woodson's 78-yard punt return, eerily similar to Howard's '91 run. The Buckeyes would score two touchdowns, but could not complete the comeback. Woodson would claim the Heisman and Michigan finished off it's season beating Washington State in the Rose Bowl to win it's first national title since 1948.
