Tulsa locks up head coach Montgomery with 2-year extension

Tulsa already had Philip Montgomery under contract until 2020, but the school decided they wanted the head coach around a little while longer.

Montgomery confirmed during a news conference Monday that he'd agreed to a new five-year contract, according to Kelly Hines of Tulsa World.

"The university has stepped up and I don't even know if I can talk about this yet or not, but I've got a new five-year deal here," Montgomery said. "I've just signed an extension here, so we're excited about that as a football staff and as a family."

Montgomery had three years left on his prior five-year contract, but the new deal keeps him on the sidelines until January 2022. In two years at the helm, Montgomery has led the Golden Hurricane to a 15-10 record and back-to-back bowl appearances.

Tulsa takes on Central Michigan in the Miami Beach Bowl on Dec. 19.

Tulsa athletic director Derrick Gragg acknowledged the effort from more than 20 donors to gather money to raise the assistant pool salary, which was a known priority for Montgomery.

"(Montgomery) was much more interested in making sure he would be able to retain his current staff or have the ability to do that," Gragg said. "In the conversations I had with the president and our donors, they were very aware of that. They did step up."
