Mike Leach goes off on College Football Playoff format
Mike Leach doesn't typically mince words, and Monday he took aim at the College Football Playoff format.
The Washington State head coach went on a rant in front of reporters about how the playoff needs to be expanded from four teams.
"I give this lecture probably three times every year, then college football, they scratch their head and give a befuddled, mixed-up look and get a really screwy expression on their face like, 'Well how can that possibly be? I mean how can we do that? How is it possible you can actually have a playoff format in college football?'" Leach said, according to Chelsea Howard of the Sporting News. "Well, gee, I don't know. Let's start with we can go down to the local city park and somebody who handles youth football could tell you how to do something like that."
Leach would prefer a much larger number of teams in a playoff, much like high school or Division III does.
"They win a certain number of games, they have some qualifications and then, boom, now they're in a playoff," Leach added. "But they don't just have four teams in a playoff, hell no, because they want people to have fun and enjoy this playoff system, so they have 16 or 32 or 64 or something like that. Then you can go to (NCAA) Division III and let's see how they do it. Oh, they do it the exact same way. OK, now the suspense is really starting to get thick. Because, you know, Division II might do it differently. No, in fact they don't. They do it exactly, exactly, boys and girls, like Division III does."
The 56-year-old thinks adding more playoff games would be a win-win for everyone.
"And I get a kick out of it, it's just comical, they say, 'Nobody would watch those games.' Oh, baloney. I mean, my wife would watch them," Leach said. "And if there's something riding on the game, people would select teams like they do in basketball, and dark horses and teams they want. They'd have little sheets with office pools and everything else. And they'd either laugh and taunt their friends or the other way around as their team did well. Yeah, it'd be fantastic. There's no disputing it would make a lot more money."
Leach's team could find itself in the four-team playoff this year with a strong finish to the season, as the Cougars currently sit eighth in the country with a 6-0 record.
