BYU's Ula Tolutau charged with marijuana possession

Chris Nicoll / USA TODAY Sports

BYU suffered an off-field blow Tuesday, as reports surfaced that running back Ula Tolutau was cited for possession or use of marijuana on Oct. 8, according to Jay Drew of The Salt Lake Tribune.

Tolutau, a freshman, has been charged with possession of a controlled substance, which is a class B misdemeanor, according to court documents.

BYU football spokesman Brett Pyne addressed the situation, saying the school is "aware" of the charges, but declined to comment further.

According to Utah County Sheriff Sgt. Spencer Cannon, a deputy stopped a vehicle carrying Tolutau as a passenger and the running back was found to be holding a frisbee containing marijuana. Tolutau was cited at the scene and subsequently released.

Any subsequent discipline will thin out BYU's struggling offense even further, as Tolutau is currently the Cougars' leading rusher through eight games with 303 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 72 carries.
