Big 12 publicly reprimands Mayfield for inappropriate gestures vs. Kansas

The Big 12 publicly reprimanded Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield on Tuesday for his actions Saturday against Kansas.

Mayfield made a crotch-grab gesture toward the Jayhawks at one point during the game, leading to the Sooners stripping him of his captaincy for his final home game. He also won't start this weekend against West Virginia.

"Mr. Mayfield’s actions are unacceptable and should not be tolerated," commissioner Bob Bowlsby said. "I am grateful for the efficient management of this matter by the coaches and administration of the University of Oklahoma. Baker Mayfield is a truly outstanding competitor and I generally appreciate his style of play and the manner in which he competes. However, the behavior he exhibited on the sideline during the Oklahoma-Kansas game was inappropriate and contrary to our sportsmanship policies."

The game began as a testy affair when Kansas' captains refused to shake Mayfield's hand at the coin toss. Bowlsby also issued a reprimand for those players.
