Martell's mom, Tafi, told David Schoen of the Las Vegas Review-Journal in 2016 that she decided on Tate after seeing the name in the credits of a movie. However, Martell's dad wanted him to have a two-syllable name.
"I told my wife, 'When they announce a name, you need to exaggerate the first name. Tate's too short,'" said Al Martell, a former wrestler. "So, that's how Tathan came about."
