Marvin Lewis joins Herm Edwards at Arizona State
Longtime Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis is headed to Arizona State as a special adviser on Herm Edwards' staff, the school announced Tuesday.
Lewis spent 16 seasons in Cincinnati before he was fired at the end of the 2018 campaign. His duties will include contributing to game strategy by studying film of opponents and speaking at various events, according to ESPN's Matt Barrie.
"I've known Herman for almost 30 years and the opportunity to come and assist him and his coaches win football games is very exciting and appealing," Lewis said in the team's announcement.
Edwards and Lewis were both NFL head coaches for most of the 2000s. Edwards is entering his second season with the Sun Devils. He went 7-6 last year in his inaugural season as a college head coach.
"I envision just being another set of eyes, another set of ears, and doing anything I can to help the coaches," Lewis said. "I was really impressed with the staff and what they accomplished after they hit the ground running last season. ASU is a great university and is known for having an outstanding athletic program that has always been able to attract top athletes from around the country and I look forward to doing all I can to help the program."
Lewis hasn't coached at the NCAA level since 1991 when he was a linebackers coach at Pitt.
The 60-year-old was the NFL Coach of the Year in 2009. He led the Bengals to seven playoff appearances in 16 years, though his 0-7 postseason record often overshadowed his regular-season accomplishments.
"Marvin Lewis is one of the most respected minds in our game," Edwards said. "Whether as the winningest coach in the franchise history of the Cincinnati Bengals or the architect of one the greatest defenses in NFL history, the 2000 Baltimore Ravens, Marvin has succeeded everywhere he has been and he has done it the right way. His passion for teaching will be an incredible benefit not only for our coaches but also for the young men we are responsible for as students and athletes."
