Report: Bieniemy turns down Colorado's HC job

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has pulled his name from contention for the vacant head coaching job at Colorado, reports Mike Klis of 9News.com.

Bieniemy is coming off a Super Bowl triumph on Feb. 2. He's led the Chiefs' offense since 2018 and previously served as the team's running backs coach from 2013-2018.

The offensive mind was thought to be the Buffaloes' top choice after Mel Tucker departed for the Michigan State job. Colorado contacted Bieniemy last Wednesday, but he never formally interviewed for the job, according to Klis.

Bieniemy played his entire college career at Colorado, finishing third in Heisman voting after a 1990 season in which he tallied 1,628 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns. He was selected in the second round of the 1991 NFL Draft and enjoyed a nine-year career.

Bieniemy interviewed for a number of NFL head coaching positions at the close of the 2019 season but couldn't land one. He'll likely be a top candidate for any vacancies during the 2020 season, Klis adds.

Colorado interviewed its interim head coach, Darrin Chiaverini, on Monday, Giants OLB coach Bret Bielema on Tuesday, and Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian on Wednesday, according to Klis. Sarkisian dropped out of the running Thursday.

Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun was expected to interview for the job Thursday.
