Georgia's Daniels granted immediate eligibility after transfer

Georgia quarterback JT Daniels has obtained a waiver to play in 2020 despite transferring from USC as an undergraduate student, he announced Monday.

"Thank you to the NCAA for granting me immediate eligibility and allowing me to play football this fall," he tweeted. "I will not comment on the waiver or transfer, but look forward to a great 2020 season with my teammates."

Once a prized recruit, Daniels spent two seasons with the Trojans before migrating to the SEC. The 20-year-old entered the transfer portal in the spring after USC named Kedon Slovis its starter going forward.

Daniels entered the 2019 campaign atop the Trojans' depth chart but suffered a season-ending ACL tear in the season opener, paving the way for Slovis to take over. As a freshman in 2018, Daniels threw for 2,672 yards with 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, completing 59.5% of his passes.

At Georgia, Daniels will compete with Jamie Newman, a fellow newcomer, for playing time. Newman, a fifth-year senior, transferred to Georgia after four years at Wake Forest.

Georgia is scheduled to open the season Sept. 7 against Virginia, though the matchup is in doubt because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
