LSU's Orgeron: 'Most of our players have caught' coronavirus

LSU head coach Ed Orgeron said Tuesday that the majority of the players on his team have contracted the COVID-19 virus.

"I think most, not all of our players, but most of our players have caught it," Orgeron said, according to Brooks Kubina of The Advocate. "So hopefully they won't catch it again, and hopefully they're not out for games."

Orgeron said he wasn't sure of the exact percentage of positive tests among LSU players when asked for clarification. He added that "about three or four guys" on the team currently have COVID-19 and a small number of players are quarantining.

The head coach believes most of the players will be eligible to play under SEC protocols.

"I'm not a doctor," he said, according to ESPN's Alex Scarborough. "I think they have that 90-day window, so most of the players that have caught it, we do feel like they'll be eligible for games."

Players who test positive for the coronavirus don't have to be tested again for 90 days.

LSU is among the athletic departments that opted not to officially release teams' coronavirus testing data.

In June, 30 Tigers football players were reportedly isolating after testing positive or coming into close contact with an infected person.

The outbreak apparently stemmed from a group of five or six players. None were hospitalized or suffered more than mild symptoms.

LSU is slated to begin its national title defense at home against Mississippi State on Sept. 26.
