Napier staying at Louisiana after discussions with South Carolina
Billy Napier will remain at Louisiana after speaking to South Carolina about its head coaching vacancy, he announced in a statement from the school.
Napier emerged as a prime candidate for the Gamecocks after leading the Ragin' Cajuns to a third Sun Belt West title in three years. He owns a 27-11 record since taking over for Mark Hudspeth, who recorded two winning records in seven seasons before him.
"It's humbling to be considered a worthy candidate for any job opening, but it's also important to realize this is a direct reflection of our entire organization from top to bottom," Napier said.
"Here at the University of Louisiana, we have a special group of people that take tremendous pride in their role. We have dynamic leadership and a unique pride and passion for the Ragin' Cajuns. We are excited to announce that we are moving forward at Louisiana."
South Carolina began searching for a new head coach after firing Will Muschamp on Nov. 15. The Gamecocks went 28-30 over four-plus seasons with Muschamp, but were just 6-13 over his final two years.
Louisville's Scott Satterfield was also connected to the South Carolina job, but he told the Courier Journal’s Cameron Teague Robinson he's staying put as well.
