Longtime NFL head coach Jeff Fisher is interested in taking over at Tennessee if the Volunteers eventually move on from Jeremy Pruitt.
"If, for some reason, coach Pruitt is no longer the head coach at the University of Tennessee, yes, I would have a great deal of interest in that program," Fisher told "The George Plaster Show" on WNSR in Nashville.
Fisher has been out of coaching since the Los Angeles Rams fired him in 2016. The 62-year-old went 31-45-1 with zero playoff appearances over parts of five seasons with the team.
Fisher spent most of his NFL coaching career with the Tennessee Titans. He began his tenure when the franchise was located in Houston and roamed the sidelines from 1995-2010 after a six-game stint as interim head coach in 1994. Fisher guided the Titans to an appearance in Super Bowl XXXIV but only made the playoffs five other times over his 21 seasons as an NFL head coach.
The Volunteers have reportedly paused hiring for staff vacancies as officials investigate possible recruiting violations. Pruitt owns a 16-19 record over three seasons with the program. He posted an ugly 3-7 mark in 2020.
