BYU walk-ons to have tuition paid for through NIL agreement
BYU announced an NIL agreement with Built Brands LLC that will pay the tuition of every walk-on in 2021.
The multi-year deal will be accessible to all members of the football team. For the Cougars' 36 walk-ons, the compensation is the "amount comparable to the cost of tuition for the academic year."
"From the beginning of the NIL discussion, my hope was that changes to NCAA rules and regulations would provide a pathway forward for all players to benefit more fully from their name, image, and likeness, especially walk-ons who sacrifice so much to make our program great," coach Kalani Sitake said.
"We are excited to partner with BYU and all 123 players on the football team. We are making history together," co-founder of Built Brands Nick Greer said.
All players who agree to the deal with Built will wear the company's branding on practice helmets and take part in experiential events. Non-scholarship players who sign an agreement with the local brand will provide additional social media and experience promotions for Built as part of the agreement.
Built Brands is a manufacturer and distributor of protein and energy products.
