Report: Liberty, New Mexico State, UConn in talks with Conference USA
Liberty, New Mexico State, and UConn are in negotiations to join Conference USA, reports The Athletic's Chris Vannini.
The Flames and Aggies would reportedly become all-sports members, while the Huskies are looking at a football-only membership. UConn's basketball programs play in the Big East.
Commissioner Judy MacLeod is looking to replenish Conference USA, which will lose six schools to the American Athletic Conference in the coming years and at least two schools to the Sun Belt Conference.
All three potential newcomers currently operate as Division I independents for football.
Liberty would headline the three newcomers, as its football, men's basketball, and women's basketball programs have all enjoyed recent success. The football team is 16-3 over the last two seasons under Hugh Freeze, while both of its basketball teams qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season.
