Michigan, Harbaugh agree to new 5-year extension
Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh agreed to a five-year contract extension through the 2026 season, the team announced Wednesday.
The new contract alters the terms of the deal Harbaugh signed in January 2021 and adds an additional season to the pact. The 58-year-old reportedly took a pay cut last year before leading Michigan to its most successful campaign of his tenure.
"I love Michigan Football, the University of Michigan, and the Ann Arbor community," said Harbaugh. "My family and I are excited to continue leading this football program, and we are thankful for the support that our athletic department and university administration have demonstrated toward the team.
"I appreciate all that our players, coaches, and staff are doing to excel on and off the football field. My enthusiasm for tomorrow, the day after, and every day following is as high as ever, and we are ready to get on the practice field and start preparations for the 2022 season. Go Blue!"
Harbaugh appeared headed back to the NFL after being pegged as the favorite for the Minnesota Vikings' head coaching position.
However, Harbaugh announced in early February that he decided to return to the Wolverines following his in-person interview with the Vikings. Minnesota ultimately hired Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O'Connell.
Harbaugh, who led the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-14, said he was done chasing NFL coaching opportunities, calling the interest in the Vikings' job a "one-time thing."
Michigan claimed the Big Ten title and its first-ever playoff berth last season after going 12-2, including a first win over rival Ohio State during Harbaugh's reign.
"Jim has done a great job coaching and developing the young men in our football program," said athletic director Warde Manuel. "Last season, Jim, along with the staff and players, delivered a memorable season that will remain with all of us for a long time. As coach said, this is just the beginning."
