Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner will likely miss the rest of the season due to a shoulder injury that requires surgery, head coach Marcus Freeman said Monday, according to The Athletic's Matt Fortuna.

Buchner suffered an AC sprain in his non-throwing shoulder in the fourth quarter of Notre Dame's loss to Marshall, Fortuna said. Buchner will undergo surgery Tuesday and will need about four months to recover.

The sophomore left Saturday's contest having completed 18 of 32 pass attempts for 201 yards along with two interceptions. He did find success on the ground, rushing for two scores to go with 44 rushing yards.

Buchner featured in 10 games last season for the Fighting Irish. He threw for 298 yards to go along with six total touchdowns. His 336 rushing yards last season were second on the team after former running back Kyren Williams.

Drew Pyne is now the Fighting Irish's starting quarterback. The Connecticut native is in his third year at Notre Dame and saw minimal action last season. He tallied 224 passing yards and two touchdowns in 2021.

Pyne will attempt to lead the Irish to their first win under Freeman when they take on Cal on Sept. 17.
