Brees joining Purdue staff as assistant coach for Citrus Bowl
Purdue is bringing in former NFL quarterback Drew Brees as an assistant coach ahead of the Citrus Bowl against LSU, the school announced Thursday.
Brees, who starred at Purdue from 1997-2000, will help the Boilermakers prepare for the matchup and will coach in the Jan. 2 game. He will also be able to participate in recruiting activities.
The ex-New Orleans Saints star arrives the same week as former Illinois defensive coordinator Ryan Walters, who was hired Tuesday to replace Jeff Brohm as head coach. However, interim coach and offensive coordinator Brian Brohm will lead Purdue against LSU.
"I am extremely excited to work with our team over the next few weeks as we prepare for the Citrus Bowl," said Brees. "I see it not only as an opportunity to coach and mentor this group of young men, but represent all the former Purdue players that care so much about our program.
"This is also preparation for the future of Purdue football with new head coach Ryan Walters. I had a great conversation with coach Walters last night and love the energy, passion, and detail he will bring to our program. The future is bright, and there is no better time to be a Boilermaker!"
The 8-5 Boilermakers won the Big Ten West Division title for the first time in program history this season.
Brees is Purdue's all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns. He also led the team to its second-ever Rose Bowl and won the Maxwell Award in 2000.
The 43-year-old retired from the NFL in March 2021 after a 20-year career. He spent his final 15 seasons with the Saints, establishing himself as one of the most productive quarterbacks in NFL history and setting numerous league and team records.
