Iowa OC Brian Ferentz will not return to team in 2024
Iowa athletic director Beth Goetz announced Monday that offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz won't return to the team in 2024.
"Anyone who loves Iowa football recognizes both the success and challenges that have brought attention to our program this season," Goetz said. "Our struggles on offense, coupled with the offensive coordinator's contract, make this a unique situation.
"After conversations with head coach Kirk Ferentz, coach Brian Ferentz, and president Wilson, I informed Brian that our intention is for him to be with us through the bowl game, but this is his last season with the program. Making this known today is in the best interest of the program and its loyal fans; it provides clarity during this pivotal time in the schedule."
Iowa has had one of the worst offenses in the nation over the last three campaigns, failing to eclipse 21 points per game each year.
Ferentz took a $50,000 pay cut last offseason. It was mandated by the school that the team finishes above 25 points per game in 2023 for his 2024 and 2025 options to roll over, according to David Eickholt of On3 Sports.
"I'm gonna approach my job the same way I've approached it for 11 years," Ferentz said before the season. "The reason that I'm at the University of Iowa, the reason why I coach here, is because I care about this program and I care about other people in this building. I have one responsibility. That's to help them win football games."
Ferentz was hired as the offensive coordinator for the Hawkeyes in 2017. His dad, Kirk, has been Iowa's head coach since 1999. Ferentz previously served as the club's offensive line coach from 2012-16.
Iowa sits at 6-2 through eight games, which is first in the Big Ten West standings. The Hawkeyes will face off against Northwestern on Saturday.
