Texas A&M informed head coach Jimbo Fisher of his dismissal Sunday after nearly six seasons in charge, the team announced Sunday.

The Aggies will owe the 58-year-old a buyout worth more than $75 million as he has eight years remaining on his contract, adds Dellenger.

The buyout to fire Fisher is the largest single buyout paid to a football coach and will nearly eclipse the entire amount spent to buy out coaches last year, which came in around $90 million.

With the Aggies expected to focus on some of the highest-paid sitting Power Five coaches to replace Fisher, as well as the need to pay buyouts for his staff, the total cost of the move could exceed $150 million, adds Dellenger.

School officials reportedly met for four hours earlier this week and were set to speak again Sunday regarding Fisher's future.

The Aggies gave Fisher an extension through 2031 after he went 9-1 during a pandemic-impacted 2020 season.

Fisher led Texas A&M to three straight bowl victories in his first three campaigns in charge and owns a 45-25 overall record.

However, pressure mounted on the head coach following a 5-7 finish in 2022 and after the team only marginally improved this season. The Aggies beat Mississippi State on Saturday 51-10 to move to 6-4.

Fisher has gone 9-13 in the SEC since signing his extension.

Associate head coach Elijah Robinson is expected to serve as the team's interim coach for the remainder of the year, sources told Pete Thamel of ESPN.

Before joining Texas A&M in 2018, Fisher led Florida State for eight seasons. He earned an 83-23 record with the Seminoles and won a national title in 2013.
