Hayes, a former three-star prospect, committed to Pittsburgh in 2020 and has been with the Panthers over the last four seasons. The Pittsburgh native decided to enter the transfer portal on Tuesday.
"It's just that I don't believe we can win now," Hayes told Christopher Carter of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I believe we (were going to) win games, but I believe we are (in) a developmental stage. And I just can't do that right now."
Hayes played in 12 games last season, racking up 45 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, and four sacks. He'd been a consistent pass-rusher for the Panthers' defense, totaling at least 2.5 sacks every season with Pittsburgh.
Colorado ranked 119th in points per game allowed in the FBS last season.
