Ewers: Manning is in 'best situation' at Texas

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers believes that backup Arch Manning is an ideal spot ahead of his second season.

"I think that he gains a lot," Ewers said on "RG3 and The Ones" podcast. "Not being from the state and coming in, and it's obviously a little different. I think he's got more time to grow his pride and love for the university. Obviously, he loves the university and loves the Longhorns. But kind of being able to sit back and watch, I think it's different than playing. So him seeing what's going on from inside, but also outside, I think that he can get a lot of intel from that.

"And then, obviously, another year to learn the offense and just get more comfortable within the smaller details. It's the best situation for him, I think."

Manning received limited opportunities last season playing behind Ewers and Maalik Murphy during his freshman year. He completed 2-of-5 pass attempts for 30 yards with zero touchdowns and no interceptions. Ahead of his second year at Texas, Manning is projected to take a larger role after displaying significant strides in his development this past spring.

Arch, the nephew of Eli and Peyton Manning, dazzled fans by passing for 355 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception during the school's annual Orange-White game in April.

The Texas quarterback room boasts one of the most talented groups of passers in the country despite losing Murphy to the transfer portal. Ewers, who is considered a Heisman Trophy candidate entering next season, believes that the Longhorns' passing group stands out as the best in the nation.

"I think we're really intense competitors and we all want the same outcome. But at the end of the day, I think we're better humans and I think we're better people, and I think that we really enjoy each other's company in that quarterback room," Ewers said.

Texas is set to face stiff competition ahead of its first season in the SEC. The Longhorns and Oklahoma officially become members of the conference July 1.

Ewers is looking to build on a successful 2023 campaign in which he led the program to a Big 12 title in its final year in the conference and a berth in the College Football Playoff.
