Utah is expected to start Cameron Rising at quarterback for Friday's matchup against Arizona State, sources told Action Network's Brett McMurphy.

Rising will make his return to the Utes' lineup after sustaining an injury to the ring finger on his throwing hand in the team's win over Baylor on Sept. 7.

Injuries have been an issue over the past three seasons for Rising. He sustained a significant knee injury in the 2022 Rose Bowl that caused him to take a redshirt for the 2023 season.

The California native threw for 346 yards, seven touchdowns, and zero interceptions through two games before his injury.

Isaac Wilson replaced the injured Rising under center. The freshman passer has thrown for 830 yards, six touchdowns, and seven interceptions while completing 55.7% of his pass attempts.

Head coach Kyle Whittingham didn't confirm Rising's status ahead of Friday during his media availability earlier in the week.

"Since there is no (injury report) mandate, why would you tip your hand in any way, shape, or form with injuries?" Whittingham said, according to The Associated Press' John Marshall. "It doesn't make any sense to give the opponent any more knowledge than they already have."
