Clemson is working toward a deal to hire Penn State's Tom Allen as the program's next defensive coordinator, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel.

Under Allen, the Nittany Lions' defense surrendered just 16.5 points per game (8th in FBS) and 294.8 total yards per contest, both of which fall in the top 10 in the nation.

The 54-year-old previously served as Indiana's head coach for eight seasons.

Penn State relied on a sturdy defense during its run in the College Football Playoff, which concluded with a loss to Notre Dame in the semifinal.

The Tigers appear to have found their next defensive play-caller after winning the ACC title and making their first appearance in the CFP since 2019. They lost to Texas in the first round and subsequently dismissed Wes Goodwin.

Clemson struggled to establish a consistent run defense this past year, surrendering 160.6 yards per game. The Tigers allowed the Longhorns to rush for 292 yards in their playoff matchup.

Clemson is bringing back plenty of talent on the defensive side of the ball, headlined by Peter Woods, T.J. Parker, and Wade Woodaz.
