Bowling Green hired former Heisman trophy winner Eddie George as its next head coach, the school announced Sunday.

The Falcons are giving George a five-year contract, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel.

"We are so pleased to welcome Eddie George back to Ohio as the next head coach of our football program," school president Rodney K. Rogers said in a statement. "Throughout his career in and outside of football, Eddie has embraced innovation and a growth mindset, founded in work ethic with a willingness to embrace continued learning and taking risks, when appropriate. These are core principles at Bowling Green and the reason we are experiencing the momentum we see today. "

Scott Loeffler, Bowling Green's head coach from 2019-24, took the Philadelphia Eagles' quarterbacks coaching job in late February after posting a 27-41 record in six seasons.

George has spent the past four years as the head boss in the FCS division at Tennessee State. He was named the Big South-OVC Coach of the Year in 2024, leading the Tigers to their first FCS playoff appearance since 2013.

The 51-year-old reportedly interviewed for the Chicago Bears head coaching job in January before they hired Ben Johnson.

George was a star running back for Ohio State from 1992-95, racking up 3,768 rushing yards and 44 touchdowns in 49 games. He was selected in the first round of the 1996 NFL Draft by the then-Houston Oilers. He rushed for 10,441 yards in 141 career contests and had four Pro Bowl nods during his nine-year NFL run.
