Despite a strong start, Stanford failed to win its second consecutive Rose Bowl.
Here's what happened.
- Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook capped off an excellent season. In his first year as a starter, Cook captured the Big Ten title and Rose Bowl. The sophomore completed 61 percent of his passes for a career-high 332 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
Connor Cook: Big Ten title game and Rose Bowl MVP. What would Vegas odds have been on that in September? 1 billion to 1?

- Despite allowing ten points and 141 yards in the first quarter, Michigan State's defense responded in excellent fashion. The Spartans held Stanford 305 total yards, recorded key turnovers and stops, including a big play towards the end of the fourth quarter.

- Regardless of the loss, Stanford thanked its senior players for an excellent career. The Cardinal reached four BCS games, and having won two of its previous four bowl contests.
Our fifth-year seniors finish with a record of 54-13 during their time at Stanford. One of the best groups in Cardinal history. #gostanford
