Boise State sells naming rights to Bronco Stadium

If you find it vexing that significant college football games carry increasingly silly names, like the TaxSlayer Bowl, the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, the Chik-fil-A Bowl, or the GoDaddy Bowl, then you probably won't be thrilled about Wednesday's news that Boise State sold the naming rights to its football stadium.

The stadium, with its famously idiosyncratic blue turf, has been named for Boise State's team, the Broncos, since being christened in 1970. But such traditional titles are slowly dying out.

With a desire to boost revenue, the school sold naming rights to Albertsons LLC, a grocery chain based and founded in Boise.

Albertsons will reportedly pay $12.5 million over 15 years to rename Bronco Stadium, which after accounting for the stake BSU's marketing company (which brokered the deal) will get, means an approximate $625,000 annual boost for the school's athletic department.

"We’re anxious to let people know we’re here to stay," said Albertsons CEO Bob Miller. "It's our corporate headquarters, it’s going to be, and this is a good way to reinforce that message."
