Miami names Brad Kaaya as starting quarterback

It looks like the Miami Hurricanes have their man at quarterback.

Miami head coach Al Golden named Brad Kaaya as the team's starting quarterback on Sunday.

The former Chaminade High School quarterback committed to Miami in May, turning down offers from a number of programs. His other options included USC, San Diego State and UCLA. He was a four-star recruit and rated by Rivals.com as eighth best pro-style quarterback in the 2014 recruiting class.

Kaaya beat out senior Jake Heaps for the starting job. Heaps came to Miami after transferring from the Kansas Jayhawks. Prior to that, Heaps spent two seasons as the quarterback at BYU.

"Separation came about a few days ago, about eight days ago," said offensive coordinator James Coley. "I thought Jake did a great job this camp and I just thought that Kaaya, towards the end here, really pulled away and started getting comfortable. Like I've been saying, he's not your regular freshman. He's not a freshman anymore. He's the starting quarterback for the University of Miami."

There's still a chance that Ryan Williams, the projected started this season before he suffered a torn ACL during spring practices, could return this year. Golden would not say whether Williams' return would re-open a quarterback competition with Kaaya.
