Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield has appeal denied, but granted scholarship
Oklahoma's walk-on quarterback Baker Mayfield will have to wait to fulfill his Sooners dreams.
The Texas Tech transfer's appeal for immediate eligibility to play for the Sooners was officially denied. However, he will be granted a scholarship, something he requested along with his eligibility appeal.
Mayfield must now sit out a year of eligibility in compliance with standard NCAA transfer rules. He left Texas Tech before the season started, after coach Kliff Kingsbury announced that the quarterback competition would be an open battle. Kingsbury also couldn't promise Mayfield a scholarship.
Mayfield appealed for immediate eligibility based on the fact that he was a walk-on. Texas Tech blocked his transfer appeal, meaning he wouldn't be able to receive financial aid in 2014.
Last year, Mayfield walked onto the Texas Tech program and made his way to starting quarterback as a freshman. He threw for 2,315 yards and 12 touchdowns, along with nine interceptions.
Red Raiders coach Kingsbury "fought Mayfield's transfer at every level" before he ultimately left, according to The Oklahoman.
The decision by the Big-12 represents something of a compromise: while he won't play this season, he was also at risk of receiving no financial aid at all. Now at least he'll be on scholarship.
Mayfield isn't the only Sooner who won't play at all for the rest of the season: Dorial Green-Bechkam, Joe Mixon and Frank Shannon are all out because of legal circumstances or injury.
