Utah State upsets No. 18 BYU for 1st win in Provo since 1978

Russ Isabella-USA TODAY Sports

No. 18 BYU is unbeaten no more.

The Cougars, now 4-1, fell 35-20 to their rivals Utah State on Friday night, in what was a very costly loss, after BYU star quarterback Taysom Hill fractured his left leg late in the second quarter

The game essentially ended when Hill was forced to leave. His replacement, Christian Stewart, completed only 9-of-28 passes for 131 yards, and threw three interceptions. BYU managed only six points in the second half, both field goals.

The Aggies, now 3-2 in 2014, picked up their first road win of the season and were led by quarterback Darell Garretson. He threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns, completing 19-of-25 passes.

The win was Utah State's first in Provo in 18 games, going all the way back to Oct. 7, 1978.

The only good news for BYU was running back Jamaal Williams's performance. He rushed for 99 yards on 17 carries, moving into eighth place on the Cougars' all-time rushing list
