3 things we learned from Saturday

Kevin Jairaj / USA TODAY Sports

The  deeper we get into the college football season, the more the pieces of the puzzle start to fit together. Every Sunday, we'll pick out the three biggest takeaways from the previous day's action and look at how they could impact the rest of the year.

Here are three things we learned from Week 9's Lukewarm Saturday:

Bad Bo came out to play vs. LSU

Ole Miss's first lost of the season to LSU showed that trouble is back, and its name is "Bad Bo" Wallace.

This season Rebels quarterback Bo Wallace had been working steadily to shrug off his reputation for inconsistency. Wallace has played it safe with good quality passes to lead his team to a No. 3 national ranking and an unbeaten record.

And then "Bad Bo" made the trip to Death Valley with the Rebels and stirred things up. Wallace struggled against the LSU Tigers. Wallace completed only 14 of 33 passes for 176 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the 10-7 loss to the Tigers. Wallace made a bad last-minute decision at a crucial time that served as the nail in the coffin for Mississippi's unblemished season. "Bad Bo" ignored coach Hugh Freeze's call for a safer throw to set up a possible field goal to tie the game and it did not pay off. Instead of a flat throw, Wallace threw a pass that was interrupted by LSU safety Ronald Martin with two seconds left. The Tigers finished the game as the winners, and Wallace left the field frustrated.

For the sake of the rest of Ole Miss's season, "Bad Bo" Wallace needs to disappear for good.

TCU could be the best one-loss team in the country

TCU stated its case for the title of best one-loss team in the nation on Saturday when it pummeled Texas 82-27.

Horned Frogs proved that Texas Tech was not going to stop them by gaining 785 yards of offense on 86 plays. Horned Frogs quarterback Trevone Boykin set a school record with seven touchdown passes. Boykin threw for 433 yards before exiting the game in the third quarter to spare the Red Raiders more gameplay pain.

The Horned Frogs just could not be stopped by Texas Tech. TCU scored a school-record 82 points, coming just two points shy of the Big 12 record for points in a game. The 82 points are also the most Texas Tech has ever allowed in school history, and the highest point total for any FBS team this season.

TCU's win launches the Horned Frogs further into the College Football Playoff conversation and makes them a notable Big 12 favorite.

Penn State has a tough defense

Penn State defense held strong against a heavy offensive battering by Ohio State.

Saturday's Penn State-Ohio State match-up was a showing of brute force, with the Buckeyes' strong rushing offense facing the Nittany Lions' top rushing defense in the country.

Despite the Nittany Lions loss to Ohio State 31-24 on Saturday in double overtime, the Penn State defensive line was able to hold the Buckeyes scoreless during the second half of the game.

Ohio State finished the game with 219 rushing yards, but it took the Buckeyes 57 carries. Ohio State's 17-point lead in the first half was destroyed by Nittany Lions defensive tackle Anthony Zettel, who returned an interception on the first drive of the third quarter for what the Internet delightfully dubbed a "big guy touchdown."

Linebacker Mike Hull also picked off a J.T. Barrett pass at the start of the fourth quarter, and recorded a career high of 19 tackles.

The game ended on a 4th down sack in the second overtime when Ohio State's Joey Bosa who bull-rushed Nittany Lion running back Akeel Lynch into quarterback Christian Hackenberg.

Bonus: Best "big guy" touchdown, ever

There are fewer joys in the college football arena than watching a player make an uncharacteristic touchdown play.

Arkansas offensive tackle Sebastian Tretola threw a beautiful touchdown pass to an open receiver in the end zone and the Internet went crazy. At 350 pounds, Tretola is now the heavier SEC player to throw a touchdown pass, and it is glorious.
