Clemson's Daniel Rodriguez wins Armed Forces Merit Award

Joshua S. Kelly-USA TODAY Sports

Clemson wide receiver Daniel Rodriguez was named this year's winner of the Armed Forces Merit Award by the Football Writers Association of America.

The award, created in 2012, honors "an individual and/or a group with a military background and/or involvement that has an impact within the realm of college football."

Rodriguez served in the Army from 2006 to 2010. He was offered a spot on the Tigers by head coach Dabo Swinney after Swinney saw a video highlighting Rodriguez's military work during 2009's Battle of Kamdesh in Afghanistan.

Rodriguez earned the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal with Valor Device for his service.

Nate Boyer of the University of Texas and Brandon McCoy of the University of North Texas are the award's previous winners.
